Frequently Asked Registration and Little League Questions

FAQ’s

1. WHAT ARE THE LAKE OSWEGO LITTLE LEAGUE BOUNDARIES?

We serve residents and students within the boundaries of Lake Oswego School District and portions of West Linn. Click on the Lake Oswego LL Boundary Map or enter your address on the Little League League Finder for your nearest league based on home address.

2. CAN I PLAY IN LAKE OSWEGO IF I LIVE OUTSIDE OF LOLL'S GEOGRAPHICAL BOUNDARIES?

Yes.There are 2 separate ways a player may be eligible to register for LOLL. A player is eligible to play in LOLL by either: 1) home address is within the LOLL boundaries (more information provided by the League Finder) or 2.) the player attends a school within the LOLL boundaries.

Boundaries are determined by Little League International and exceptions can not be granted. Addresses will be verified.

3. ARE THERE 2 YOUTH BASEBALL LEAGUES IN LAKE OSWEGO AND WHICH ONE SHOULD I CHOOSE?

There are 2 baseball leagues in Lake Oswego. Lake Oswego Little League (LOLL) usually serves the North end of the lake and Pacer Youth Baseball typically serves the south side of the lake. Typically, players on the south end of the lake (i.e. Westridge, Hallinan, Palisades, and River Grove) have chosen to play Pacer Ball because it's more centrally located to their homes.

There are absolutely NO restrictions between the leagues, so if you live on the southern end of the lake, and prefer to play LOLL... that is ABSOLUTELY an option for your family. Feel free to contact Pacer Baseball if you have any questions regarding their program.

4. WHAT IS MY PLAYER’S “LEAGUE AGE” OR “LITTLE LEAGUE AGE” AND WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT?

Your player’s league age is determined by the Little League Baseball and Little League Softball  Age Charts. The dates for baseball and softball are different, but each determines the division in which your Little Leaguer will play this season.

Not sure? Check out the League Age Determination for the info. If you still have questions about your child’s League Age or what level of play is appropriate, please feel free to contact [email protected]

5. WHAT IS A SKILLS ASSESSMENT? WILL MY PLAYER NEED TO DO IT?

LOLL holds small-group evaluations for National League and American League participants. Prior to National League (Tee Ball through Pacific League), players are placed on teams based on their neighborhood school and parent requests.

Lake Oswego Little League holds a skills evaluation during February ahead of the division drafts for every player who is eligible for the National League through American League of Little League Baseball. Our evaluation is typically administered by our Safety Officer and allows the coaches to assess each player's skill level for throwing, fielding and batting. Additionally, we time each player to assess his or her speed and rank our players to allow for the coaches to draft and build fairly balanced teams. At this level there is an explicit intent to create diverse, competitive teams. Learn how to prepare your player for tryouts... and more HERE.

The evaluation will be held in February.  We set an alternate make-up day to allow players who cannot make the evaluation an opportunity to be assessed prior to the draft.

We understand that a skills evaluation may be stressful, and Little League makes every effort for this to be a fun, non-pressure event.

6. IF THERE’S A SKILLS ASSESSMENT, DOES THAT MEAN THERE ARE CUTS?

For National and American (Player-Only Pitching) Leagues, there will be a skills assessment in order to organize and draft players to form fairly balanced teams. No player will be cut, and ALL PLAYERS WILL HAVE A TEAM TO PLAY ON. In some cases, the Division Coordinators and Coaches may agree that, for safety concerns, a kiddo would benefit from playing in a different division level. This may be common for a player with little player-pitch experience. The goal is for player’s to have a positive baseball experience.

7. MAY I REQUEST A CERTAIN COACH OR FRIEND’S TEAM?

For baseball at the Tee Ball and Coach Pitch levels (Tee-Ball through Pacific League), we make every effort to accommodate a player’s teammate and coach requests. Requests will be handled on a best-effort basis, but are NOT guaranteed. We appreciate your understanding.

For Player Pitch divisions where there is a skills evaluation and teams are built using a draft system, it is NOT POSSIBLE to request placement with a friend or coach.  It’s also important to know that it’s possible that your child will be on a team with players he or she will not know.  This also gives the 3rd through 6th graders a chance to meet and play with kiddos in nearby LO schools. What a great opportunity for players to build a strong friendship base before entering Middle School.

At this level there is an explicit intent to create diverse, competitive teams.

8. HOW DO I GET INVOLVED AS A COACH, ASSITANT OR SNACK SHACK HELPER?

We welcome all volunteers! If you’d like to coach or fill one of many volunteer positions with a team, you will be able to indicate your interest during the registration process and we will reach out to you afterward to discuss further. Fill out a volunteer form now to get started!

Prior to the occurrence of the above events, a refund of the registration fee will be issued.

However, as learned in 2021, unforeseen circumstances can happen. In the event of a pandemic, we will re-evalute fees. If the season is canceled prior to the start of sanctioned games, you will be refunded 80% of your registration fee. The cost of uniforms will also be deducted from the refund if they have already been ordered. Once sanctioned games have started the league will assess amounts to refund based on the operating costs incurred at the time of the cancellation.

11. WHAT THINGS WILL MY PLAYER NEED PRIOR TO PLAY?

As a league, we provide shirts and a hat to each player. Each team is also provided with balls and catcher’s gear. Your player will need their own pants, helmet, bat (USA Bat standard), glove and water bottle. For specific required and optional equipment, please see your specific division HERE.

12. WHEN WILL I FIND OUT WHEN MY PLAYER HAS BEEN PLACED ON A TEAM?

After registration closes, the LOLL volunteer Commissioners work diligently with the coaches to manage teams. Please allow 2-3 weeks after the registration deadline for teams to be formed. The first communication regarding your player's team will be from the Head Coach.

13. WHEN ARE PRACTICES AND GAMES?

Each level of play is a little different and the specific days of the week are not assigned to the coaches until after the teams are formed. Teams usually practice 1-2 days a week and play 1-2 games a week. Everyone will play most Saturdays during the season.

14. HOW LONG ARE PRACTICES AND GAMES?

Practice can range from 1-2 hours depending on the coach and level of play.

15. WHAT ARE THE PLAYING TIME REQUIREMENTS FOR LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL AND FOR LAKE OSWEGO LITTLE LEAGUE?

Little League® Baseball has a minimum playing requirements which stipulate that each player must play a minimum six (6) defensive outs (i.e. 2 innings) each game.

LOLL adheres to more stringent local league rules. The purpose of the additional requirements is to create a richer and fuller experience for players of all skill levels in player pitch divisions.  These rules will ensure that players are able to experience more time on the field at multiple positions during every game.
